Wild about colour

Work in progress for an illustration celebrating being at one with nature

It would be an understatement to say I’m wild about colour, I’m totally obsessed! I can’t imagine a day where I don’t notice a beautiful colour combination whilst out walking or get an excited swell in my chest when I see a tray of coloured pencils. Colour fills me with joy; rainbow, clashing, contrasting, muted, brights, you name it I love it. Crimson lake, Prussian blue, Burnt Sienna and French grey bring fond memories of double art on a Monday afternoon when I would be drawing a still life of chains and rusty bucket!

Colour challenges us, we have deep associations that can sway our decisions about the colours we choose. Red can divide opinion; garish or simply eye-catching, is green natural or spooky, are we calm or corporate in blue. Colour conveys so much about a mood, feelings and personality, there’s so much to explore and have fun with I never get bored. Creating palettes and combinations for illustrations is a truly exciting part of my daily work.
